I fed my boy's fish frozen bloodworm last night at about 8:30 unpluging the filter for the couple of minutes it takes their fish to destroy the cube in a feeding frenzy, i do this this once every two or three days with no problems. Last night for some unknow reason, in a moment of madness i walked away without pluging it back in!!!

This morning my boy woke me up early with two dead catfish.... I've removed the poor guy's, done a 50% water change and obviously pluged the filter back in, this was all at about 6am. It's now 9am and all seems to be ok.

The tank is 70 litres (water stat's have been good), with a red tailed shark, 3 clown loaches, 4 dwarf gouramis, and now minus to Corydoras (not sure what type)

I was wondering if the filter being unpluged for about ten hours caused the death of the catfish or do i have another problem to worry about and do you think all the other fish are going to be ok and is there anything else i can do to help the situation? :thanks:

tricky to say just from that info.

it could be, could be something else, i wouldn't expect fish to die overnight with no filter, however i've heard similar stories before.

you'll need to keep a close eye on your water stats the next few days, you may have a mini cycle, if so keep up 20% water changes every day until it's done.

Thanks for the info it's now 6:30pm havn't lost any more fish and rechecked the water - PH 7.2, Amonia 0 ppm, Nitrite 1 ppm, Nitrate 20
The Nitrite was 0 ppm and the Nitrate seems to have spiked it was around 5 ppm 2 days ago.. I'll recheck tomorrow
Thanks again :good:

How many gallons or litres is the tank.
It's tough on the bottom if the filter wasnt on, could of been lack of 02.

I can see why now the tanks overstocked.
Red tailed sharks need 40gal tanks.
Clown loaches 90gal tanks.

Ahh! Thanks for that, my boy's not going to be best pleased, they will have to come downstairs into my tank. Just building a cabinet to take my 70 -75gal (48"x18"x24") tank at the moment when i'm done and the tank is cycled they can go in there. The loaches and the shark are fairly small at the moment, so hopefuly they can stay put for the next two month's.
