It has been a month since I bought my filter and the box says I should change the cartridge every month. Is there some special way I should go about doing this? I know that a lot of the good bacteria is on the existing cartridge and simply swapping them would eliminate most of it.

What kind of tank/filter is this? Sounds like an Eclipse tank.

On my Eclipse, I don't change the cartridge every month... they want you to do that so you can buy more supplies from them. I usually change it every 3 months... but rinse my existing one in syphoned tank water during my water changes.

When I actually do change the whole cartridge, then I cut off the cartridge floss pad and place it on top of the new cartridge in the filter. Let that sit for a couple of days, so the bacteria can spread onto the new cartridge.

Seems to work for me.

The filter company are ripping you off they only have to be changed every six months. It needs to be cleaned in tank water every water change though. When you do change it cut the new and old one in half and put in a piece of each that way you keep the bacteria!!

It's a Whisper Micro Filter (if that's important).

By rinsing I assume you mean running the cartridge under the syphoned water. You do that once a week with the water changes?

iv never changed on of mine yet... first tank was set up in nov last yr and its still got the orig filter media in it..

i just give it a good ol' clean in tank water :)
