Filter And Sand

I would post this in the hardware section, but I feel like I would get more responses in here. Can someone tell me how to put the sponge on the filter intake to keep sand from getting into the filter? Which sponge should I use? and whatever else I need to know. I want to make sure the water is getting filtrated enough. Maybe someone has some pictures?

Im using a whisper and the intake is not close to the substrate. I made sure of that when I set it up. The problem is the fish are stirring up the substrate and the sand is getting into the filter. It doenst happen suddenly, it takes a while before the filter starts messing up and I have to take it apart to fix it. I am just trying to make sure I put the sponge on the intake the right way.
