Fillling From The Hosepipe

ok, im sure ive read somwhere before about people fillling the tanks after a part water change directly from the hosepipe,

now, correct me if im worng, but wouldnt the shock of the cold water kill the fish? i usually fill from a bucket and match the water temperature by mixing hot and cold, but thats quite difficult

anyone shed any light on the subject?

I fill direct from a hosepipe for the tanks in my garage-Have done it for years with no problems as yet. I have to be a bit careful in the depths of winter as the water is very cold and can chill the tank water down quite a lot.

a 20% cold water change is fine cold

again i fill my tanks with a hosepipe just remember about dechlor i add 50% before and 50% after filling. i do generally 30% water changes this way.

If you fill them from a mixer tap, you could match the water temp and use the hosepipe still

Yes but you might have to be a bit careful with a possiblity of dissolved copper from your pipes and hot water tank affecting shrimps and your fish. I have mixed water before though myself with no problems and i have lots of shrimps.

i dont have a mixer tap, i have an outside tap with the hose attached, and some funny taps on the inside that a hose wont fit on, which is why i'm left using a pan!

i have a combi boiler, but copper pipes, so unfortunately it cant be avoided - fish have always coped though! i dont have shrimps to worry about either

Combi boiler is fine - it means the water isn't sat in the pipes/water tank for long periods. Using a combi boiler is really no different to water from your cold tap.
But, it's fine to top up with the cold, doing 20-30% water changes my temp only drops a couple degrees and the fish seem to like it - I'm guessing based on the fact that they come and play in the cooler water, rather than shying away from it.
Obviously, if you have very sensitive fish (maybe discus?) you might want to think about matching temps more carefully but otherwise it's good to go.
Seems everyone has different ways of dechloring when they use the hose.
You only need to dechlor for the amount of water replaced (the rest of it has already been dechlored).
Some put the whole dose in first, some (me) put it in after, some do half and half - whatever floats your boat =)

There is no need to break up the dechlorinator, just put the full dose in the tank before you fill.
