my two jewels have been lip locking and normally my tur jewel would win and that would be that but my red has now and its bullying the whole tank and my other jewel is cowering i dont know what to do as i only have the one tank. also my lfs dont take fish any ideas think i might have to put him up for sale asap any thoughts p.s i knw its not new world but i use this part of the forum

I only had red jewel for a couple of weeks, they were given to me, I had to re-home both as they were a nightmare. Its not ideal but could you put the red in a breeding trap or something to stop it harrassing the other fish till you either sell it or give it away.

Dare I say it but this is a reason why African and American cichlids don't mix well, I know they started on each other but now you have the whole tank affected with quite an aggressive fish.

IMHO I'd re-home or move the nasty Jewel to another tank if you have one ASAP or at least divide the tank for a while...I had a similar problem with my male HRP bullying a firemouth, I ended up putting a divider in and separating off the HRP so the firemouth could get better, but that was far from ideal. They now occupy different tanks...

ye think its time for a re stock luckily the con is bigger and just ignores the jewel so not too bad for rest of the tank just the other jewel think im going to remove him into a breeding trap like star said. i do have a empty tank that has heater but no filter or lights would that be ok ? just until i re home the jewel? this makes me re think aggressive fish #40##

No filter won't be all that good unless you want to be doing twice daily 90% water changes? Also that will depend on the spare tank size...

If you can afford it I'd go out and buy a cheap filter for the tank and seed it from your main one, as it is really a good thing to have a spare to be able to use...saying that my spare is now a breeding tank so I can't put anything else in there now anyway

I would ask yourself if you would be okay to lose the Jewels, if that fits with a long term vision then take them to an LFS that will have space for them.

IMHO the best type of cichlids for lesser aggression are South American's, specifically geophagus and severum species...that's what I am aiming for in my big tank (with a few stragglers such as a Port Acara (SA) and a Firemouth (CA) - he can be a git though so he might get re-homed at some point!

ye i really dont have the money to buy a filter and time to run a 2nd tank the tank is a 2ft juwel

i want to re home the jewel and ive asked all my local lfs and they dont take fish in.

i just need something temporary but i feel bad putting it in a breeding trap thanks for the advice

Try posting a re-home request in the livestock section, you may find there are other members happy to take the fish off you who live just around the corner...

Sounds like you might not have an option but to use the breeding trap for the interim though...LFS's can be so cr4p sometimes

ye ill use the trap see how it goes and ye i im planning on putting it up here. and ye i went and they have 3 tanks with only one tank with some goldfish in and they said no cheer for your help m8

ye hes now in the trap doesnt seem that fussed to be in there and the other jewel has started to come out of hiding but fins are in bad shape, considering a whole re stocking also put the jewel up for re homing

I've kept red jewels and cons together for 7 months with no serious problems, just a bit of chasing but no nasty biting. if you live near London I can rehome your jewel, red or turquoise.

hey ye the con and jewels get on fine it was jewel on jewel action. normally the lip locking stops after awhile and thats it but this time the winner carried on chasing i have some pics than ill upload later of the two. its a shame as the turquoise one has realy nice colouring but now has a really bad lip and fins are ripped up i might try and re home both and stick to new world only. and to answer you sorry m8 live in the midlands sorry
