hi today i did a partial water change and when tipping the new fresh water in i was creating alot of current for my fish and may have even damaged the fish. so how do you guys put water in without the huge currents? also completely off topic, how does bogwood affect ph? thanks

it really depends on the fish if they will be bothered by it or not, some like a lot of current and the drop in temp can trigger spawnings, however it can upset and even kill more delicate fish. can you tell us how big the tank is, what fish you have and how much water you change at any one time?

ways to slow down the current and the shock are

1 - pour the water in slower, requires a bit of control with your bucket arm! lol
2 - put the water in a jugfull at a time
3 - hold a plate just below the water surface and pour onto this, it spreads out the water and the flow
4 - use a hosepipe to fill the tank and control the speed with the tap

bogwood can lower pH however the effects can vary drastically from one piece of wood to another depending on a number of factors.

thansk for that wiggles, my tank is 130 litres and i change 50% fortnightly. I have emperor tetras and tiger barbs

a 50% change is fairly large, when i do changes that big i make sure i run the water in slowly to give the heaters a chance to catch up. i'd recommend doing 25% changes weekly if possible :good:

I now use a python to refill my tanks but when I used the buckets, I poured the water in using a 2 quart bucket and poured it into plastic cup to keep from disturbing the bottom too much. Even with the python, I still let it run into the cup.
