Please forgive me if i sound like an idiot.
If i was wanting a betta in its own tank (from what i've heard/read 2.0 - 5.0g is fine), would i go about it by cycling a tank like normal, or is it totally different for a betta on its own in a tank?

Thank you.

well i think most would agree that you don't need to cycle a tank for bettas as long as you do regular water changes.

If you get a 5 gallon then it's worth cycling, but I wouldn't try it with anything smaller; just do 100% weekly water changes

Ok, thanks for the info..
So if i just go through it and correct me if i am going wrong.
1) buy tank, small heater/lighting (as seen in sticky thread ;))
2) dechrlorinate the water
3) add gravel/sand
4) add betta?

Also, if i do 100% water changes, would i just need to put my betta in a small temp tank (with dechlrorinated water in) to empty the previous water and add new?

Thankyou, this forum is a godsend (even though i aint religious ;) ).

I would suggest using gravel and not sand in a tank you're going to do 100% water changes on weekly. The sand will cloud the water and usually takes a day to settle back to the bottom.

Okay, thanks for letting me know.
So, all thats left for me to do is get some money for a tank, equipment and other things, and the betta.
Cheers :D

Also, could someone answer:
"Also, if i do 100% water changes, would i just need to put my betta in a small temp tank (with dechlrorinated water in) to empty the previous water and add new?".

Yep that's exactly what you would do, and also be sure that the temps match on the old and new water. Goodluck finding that perfect fish, and welcome to the addiction!

Thanks so much, you've put my mind at ease now, can't wait to get my first.
Quote from my mom "You're not getting another bloody tank, you've got one and thats enough"
me: "Yea, sure.. no more tanks mum, the ones enough  ".... (thats what she thinks ;))

If you ant a fish that has better health, you might want to get your first betta online instead of from the pet shop :) I know Synirr has some babies, and nashnut DID... It's nice to have something a little less common :) If you look in the right places, you will only have to pay some low cost shipping, and not money for a betta ^^

When you change the water on a betta tank, this is what I'd recommend doing... just dip out some tank water into a small container (I use a drinking glass) and pop Mr. Betta in there while you clean the tank. Once you're done, just pour him into a net and pop him back in the tank. Quick and easy
