I've got a couple of Festivums, that I was led to believe were a pair, but since I put them in the tank, they've each staked out a part of the tank, and one has a tendency to chase the other. Today I caught them locking lips for approx. 20mins, on and off.

My questions are:

Is this the behaviour of a pair, or 2 males?

Is there any way to sex Festivums?

In most cichlids the only sure way to sex them is by venting. In general, albeit a much less precise way, males will be bigger and have a more pointed dorsal fin.

Could be both but most times it's the act of 2 males. You said that they each staked out territory so I would guess that along with this behaviour, you have 2 males.

What size are they?

When I said they've staked out their territories, I'm not too sure if that's the case or not. One has staked out a bogwood cave, and chases anything away from it. The other tends to hang around at a terracotta pot, but doesn't chase anything away, except for the occasional Firemouth that comes visiting!!

What exactly is venting, and how do you do it?

They're both about 2", tip of mouth to end of tail...Maybe slightly smaller, as it won't come up to get measured :D
