Females

Hi, i bought a female VT (i think) today, still young, and put her in my 20 gallon community. In it there is:
5 Black widow tetras
1 Bristlenose plec
3 bronze cories
2 Honey gouramis

When i bought her she was with about 8 other females in the same tank. Since i put her in the tank she seems a bit lonely, just staying in a corner of the tank. Would it pay to get some more females and put them in with her? if so how many?

It would but I think you need a bigger tank, If you get a bigger tank or I did some calculations wrong in the adding of the fish you would need to get either 3 or more or just leave her by herself. Hopefully someone will give you some more help. Oh and a picture of your girl would help us identify her tail type.

I would get her a tank for her own. It is too small of a tank to add another 3 female bettas. Not that you can't keep a female on her own but I don't know if she will get along well with the tetras or gouramis.

You know I bought a female and she got bloat I belive it was called. I don't know why, My male I've had for about a year and a half. I wish you luck with yours.

They are cautious fish, and a bit stubborn, so it's likely she would have "pouted" no matter what you did.

I also worry about the gouramis in the same tank with her. From what I've read, it doesn't always work out.

She would be fine in a nice sized tank of her own. I had a lone female in a seven gallon with some shrimp and two snails, and she did beautifully.

Just thought i'd let you know, i'm getting her her own tank tomorrow, its gonna be another 2.5 gallon. Just dunno where i'm gonna put it

I thought teras4me was just ignorant, but now I think he/she's definately trolling. The same was said in another thread, and the misinformation was corrected. Again, I'd like to say: PLEASE do not post advice unless you are certain it is correct. Misinformation kills fish, and this forum is supposed to help people get accurate advice from experienced fishkeepers.

Yea some people just shouldnt own fish, like in this book I read at the barnes & noble it said that males and females "absolutely have to" be kept together and they hate big tanks so both should be kept in smaller than .5 gallons. It made me so angry that I took it to the help desk and said that this book is giving out bad advice but they didnt take me seriously

Anyway... I finally got her into her new tank today, i'm going camping tomorrow so wont see her all week, but will do a water change as soon as i get back.
She's just exploring the new home, theres a couple of plants and a cup for her to hide in (am going to replace it with a few rocks when i get back)

So i hope all goes well
