hey guys and girls.

I got my fiancee into fish keeping and she settled for an all-female betta tank.
the tank is a 10G, well filtered, heated tank, ranging from light to medium planted.

we've gone through a good amount of girls, most of which have died the same way.
they do well for a while, grow up and get big, then get eggy. stay eggy for a while, then
start getting lethargic and then die.

they do not die out of aggression from other girls. just to get that out of the way.

is this something that will always happen when there is no male present to get rid of the eggs? or is there
something else causing them to die like this? some have lasted several months, but
eventually end the same way.

your help is much appreciated.

there may be a Plakat male in your tank? post pics of the fish you have so we can see. they get eggy when fed protien-high food and/or see a male for a while.

and no death will always happen to your females if they dont have males

maybe you are feeding them to much
or are feeding them thing to high in protein which makes them bloated,
so you could try feeding them skinned boiled peas.

I'm fairly certain I've had 2 female bettas die from not being able to release eggs.
They both became bloated and developed dropsy.
The last one this happened to.... I was curious to see what would happen when I kinda squished her belly (she was dead btw)... and a TON of eggs came out of her...

Really not sure if there is anything you can do.

i've had plakat males as well as many other bettas myself, and i'm sure all we have are females. sorry I dont have pictures of the fish at this point and when I have tried,
they never work out in that tank for some reason...maybe the lighting screws up the pics? i dont know...

I believe this could be a potential cause. we feed the fish a mix of veggie flakes and tetracolor tropical granules.
I believe the tetracolor food is indeed high in protein...

so a diet change might solve things you think?

He's right bloating is a cause and you need to feed half a boiled shelled pea to your girls (each) every week or two to prevent bloating. just make sure they all eat a little it doesnt have to be the whole amount. To keep their digestive systems healthy. try and feed a variety of food e.g. mondays blood worm tuesday wed thurs pellets.. a bit of pea at the weekend.
Remember your betta doesnt need feeding every day. If they bloat easily you can feed every other day (bettas can go a week without eating)
Food wise they should have a diet of good quality pellets, pea once a week or once every 10 days and treats of blood worm or brineshrimp once a week or less
