OK some of you may remember me asking a lot of questions about housing females in a 5 gallon, now the last question before I start setting up the home. I was planning on getting 1 crowntail female in a 5 gallon when Brian (the guy at my LFS) mentioned that on wednesday they were getting a shipment of over 5 crowntail females and 6 or so males and 3 mustard VTs. Now the question. Will 3 Females do ok in the 5 gallon? Help Would GREATLY be appreciated.

You might be able to pull it off if they are siblings, for example.

Or if they are housed together in one tank at your LFS and know eachother and already have the pecking order established.

But I think you should have more than three- two tend to team up...

And a five gallon can not hold more than three anyway.

You really should have a ten gallon or so if you're going to put girls together.

my LFS keeps them seperate for fear that they'll make their pecking order and then 2 will be bought off and like 2 will team up on one and kill it but I think I'm going to try to get three all together and keep them in seperate bags for like an hour in the same tank right next to each other to see if they can kind of get used to each other and then introduce them all at the same time and see what happens, I'll probably get 2 small containers incase the worst becomes of them so i can seperate them, I've heard that getting one, then another, then another on 3 seperate occasions is a very bad idea so thats why I'd get them at the same time. Anymore help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't count on it working out that well...

They might cooperate for a few days and then decide which one of them is weaker and go after that one...

But oooookay...

I might just get 1 but it seems like a waste when its possible to keep more in that 5 gallon, the tanks arent very expensive, they cost only a little more than the fish which are about 5 dollars a piece, because these tanks are the plastic tanks with a hood that has a clear opening thing in the middle and like a mesh with plastic top, I dont know what I'm gonna do.

Do not keep more than one betta in a 5 gallon tank. It's too small, and the only way it would work out is if they were both very passive, and your chances of that is very slim. Especially since CTs tend to be more aggressive than other bettas (from my observation).

If you want to keep more than one betta in a 5 gallon tank, divide it into two. Otherwise, just one would be very happy in there by herself.

Yea I'm sticking to 1 in each 5 gallon, I've decided that I will enjoy them being seperate. Thanks

I don't think it is a waste at all. =) All of my Bettas that I keep in over 5g's are very happy and they appreciate every inch of it! With a larger tank, you also have the space to keep a couple ghost shrimp, 2 ADF's, or a snail to create a pretty setting. I would also be very, very cautious with even keeping 3-4 CT girls in a 10 gallon, CT's are usually the nastiest little things. Maybe just keep one male in the 5g, and get a 10 gallon (which can be super cheap if you search local stores) for the 3-4 girls.
