Trust me, there is nothing immaculate about mollies! Little sex fiends they are. I am afraid they can keep storing sperm for almost a year, the figure 7 pregnancies is often mentioned, but not sure how accurate that is.

not to mention that there are bound to be some males in each "litter" and if they live to maturity, mom and the sisters are going to start looking pretty good

oh no what a nightmare!out of all my fish to have babies, the least pretty one has millions!!,i was hoping if any fish were to have babies it would be the guppies as they are so pretty and colourful, but no luck with that it seems! i dont know what i will do with all the mollies babies ! argh!they are cute, but not if she has another 5 litters of them!, does anyone know what temperature i should have the tank at for them, the mum one is in the same tank as the babies.also when will they be fully grown? thanks to everyone for all your help, ive never found out so much about tropical fish before and ive been telling all my friends, who are amazed!!!

if you go to the main forum page, there is a section at the top called Fish Index (under the newbie board) which has profiles on lots of different fish. If you look under Livebearers you should find for mollies :)

there is a very good chance that many babies will die or be eaten so it may not become a problem. however if you find your numbers increasing and you don't want them to you can see if a pet store will take them, but they aren't going to take them as fry, obviously. you'll have to wait a while. Not sure how long, someone else should have that answer.

best bet with livebearers, if you don't want babies, only purchase males :)

hi thanks for your message. i didnt know it was a female when we bought it, i just let my 3 kids choose whatever fish they wanted,we started off with 7 full grown fish, different types, then when the mollie had babies (the first lot) she killed 3 of the adult fish! think she was trying to protect the babies, whihc is why i bought another tank and moved her into that one! and my little 3 year old son picked the mollie out because he liked the look of it, im finding out a lot more now about how to tell the males and females apart for next time lol! :)

odd that she killed those other fish. What were they? It's unlikely that had anything to do with the babies because mollies will eat their own babies.

this is a picture of a swordtail, but the same is true for all livebearers (guppies, mollies, platys, swordtails being the common ones). The arrow is pointing to a modified fin (called a gonopodium) that all MALE livebearers have in order to insert sperm packets into females. Females have more of a rounded fin.

Well, her name IS Mary.
To be honest you should have seen the immaculate births coming a mile away!
