I have a female margold swordtail who insists on digging up the gravel in my tank. This is the second time she has done it, and in the same corner too. She has choosen a back corner and just moves the stones out of the way and into a heep and this time has unplanted one of my plants that have been in the tank in the back there. I just did a water change this past Thursday (February15). There is a male swordatail in tank, and he was in the tank before her.

Could she be intimidated from the male, because he was in the tank before her? I mean the male is about half the size of my female, but I think that is normal size for both. They live in a 10gallon tank, and it is partially planted. Here are a few pictures below.

My question is....Why would my female swordtail be doing this??? Could she be trying to spawn or what??

Here is a picture of the gravel that is moved into a heep, and you can see the plant dug out.

It shouldn't be a huge concern as long as your water conditions are good. Fish sometimes act oddly when water has a bioload buildup or if there is chlorine in the water, but digging is a normal thing fish do.

I never really knew that fish liked to dig. I knew some did but not swordtails. Guess it's kinda rare. Thanks for the responses!!!

They may be digging around for food. My fish tend to do that after I feed them as small particles may be lying around on the substrate.
