Hello,
I have just introduced a Female Siamese Fighting Fish into my tank, I have 2 Dwarf Gourami's (1 male/1 female) already in the tank.
The man at the shop was quite helpful and said that she (fighting fish) would be fine in with the Gourami's but I'm a little worried as she seems very timid, could this be due to her just getting used to her new home? The female gourami isn't interested in her but the male has approached her and she shot off, my other question is will she be bullied by the male gourami or will he just leave her be once he knows she's a part of their home now

Thank you :)

risky - seeing as they are fairly closely related, the male DG may see the female fighter as a threat or a mate. Keep a very close eye on things and ensure the male is not harrassing the fighter.

also, having 1m and 1f of the DGs isn't a recommended idea either - the males can pester the females continuously, leading to stress and possible death. 2+ females for each male is advised.

The man said when I bought her to keep an eye and he's only shown a little interest, he's too busy pacing the tank (always does when light is on, attention seeker ha!) She's only been in for an hour so fingers crossed all goes well :)

Also when I bought the gourami's I bought them in a pair, he does pester the female but the shop by me only sells them in pairs :eek:/ they've been together now for 3/4 months and the F/G doesn't seem stressed

Thank you for your advice

just another slice of general advice....

......fish shops exist to make money, therefore be wary of any advice they give you that results in you spending cash!

Oh I understand that, my local shop is only small and to be honest they are helpful, they have advised me on what not to have in my tank due to my abbino frog (who is getting a new home all to himself this week)

What is it with fish shops being obsessed with selling gouramis in pairs, like they are lovebirds or something? And it only seems to be DGs they do that with.
If my LFS tried to do that, and I only wanted one, I'd insist on them being captured in seperate bags and then just leave one on the counter on the way out. They can't force you to take it with you, neither can they force you not to shop somewhere else next time.

So you'd suggest I get another female? Does it have to be same colour as the 2 I have? Sorry if that sounds like a silly question but I am new to fish keeping

ive got female fighters with a male honey gourami. no problems

I have had 3 dwarf gourami, 2female, 1 male... with 3 female fighters... and they where no issue other than the female fighters ate all the eggs/fry every spawn the gouramis had.

The new tank will take a while to get use to, also keeping a group of atleast 3females may bring her out more.

I had one male dwarf gourami with a sorority of female bettas with no problems (well, not between the two species anyways). He was an old guy though and they were in a 200L tank
