Hi everyone.
My boyfriend bought four female fighters from his LFS. They are living at my house and have settled in nicely. The tank they were from had about 20-30 fighters in it and the fins on one were really haggard. I know for a fact the other three are females but the last one is raising doubt in my mind and im now wondering if its a juvi male? There is still some more growth to be done on 'it's' fins.

I couldn't get a picture (digi cam batteries are dead and my mobile phone wouldnt take a decent enough pic) so i have a video. Its a big shakey and the fish was swimming all over but theres a few seconds where it holds still. I can try and get pictures later on this evening

What do you recon? Female or juvi male?

have you seen it flare at all? look out for a beard, it could well be a PK (Plakat) Male. Heres a pic of my PK to compare (brought him as female)

Notice the longer Ventricles (fins under the chin) normally the give away, also check the link in my signature it tells you some more info :good:

Male PK is what im worried about lol. Its the one long ventricle thats got me worried ,its definately longer than the females. I havent found a mirror i can use to get it flaring yet. Ill try later on and update. Really think it is a male :/
Thanks for the reply. Ill check out your link later when im at a computer

From what i can see that looks like a female to me. I would keep an eye on her though, but im pretty sure its female :) Shes a beauty by the way :) got some pictures of the others? :)

i'm still looking at it and seeing Jovi/Prince all over again, they both lived together as i thought they were females, then i had to issolate Prince as he attacked a cory, next morning a bubblenest and flaring from both

oh haha :) do Beta's and Cories not mix? i was looking to keep a male Beta in my latest planted 60ltr with some cories and a few others?

i keep my other bettas with cories no problem, just this guy and the cory was a fully grown female Pepper that was bigger than him

Ahright OK PHEW!!!! :look: Was worried for a second there my plans were flawed haha

Off topic, but Matt, go to Paddock Farm at Dalton Gates for your betta. That's where I got mine last year. Their bettas are (or were last autumn) in individual filtered tanks. They also had lots of superdeltas and crowntails with only a couple of veiltails (the common ones).

Ohhh thanks Essjay :) Ill take your advice on that one :) was wondering where i was going to get my male from, as i didn't want to get it from either of our LFS's IE: Egglescliffe or P@H. As i was looking for something a little more fancy.

Off topic again: But where do you get your fish from around here? :) previously i have got all of mine from LFS but now starting to venture online and to other places :)

My favourite shop is Paddock Farm, though I haven't been there since I got my betta. It's a bit far for the odd tub of fish food. They were just finishing a major refit when I was last there, and things were looking better than ever. They'll also order bits of 'hardware' if you ask.
I also use Maidenhead Aq in Strikes at Stokesley, Chilton Aq at Chilton, and when we've been for a day out in York, I always call in at Aquatic Finatic on the 168 just south of Northallerton. Teesside Koi (oppsite the post office sorting office in Stockton) also has tropicals, though they've never had what I wanted. The same for Petmania in both Billingham and Portack Lane.

I don't like that garden centre in Eaglescliffe - I've had too many problems with fish from there. If you do buy, make sure you quarantine.

Yeah i use MA at Stokesley aswell. I didnt mean the garden centre (Peter Barrets) i meant Sunningdale pets. Its just a little pet shop but they have a good marine and tropical stock and Simon the owner knows what hes talking about with it :good: always a good thing :p

I would never EVER buy fish from Peter Barrets. They treat there fish horrendous and there untreated overstocked like mad, and all un healthy, i have never had a healthy fish from them, and have many conflicts with the staff there about how they treat there fish.

But appart from Sunningdale Pets & MA at Strikes, I havent used anywhere else really. just the odd bits here and there. Ill deffinatly check out Paddock Farm :)

Iss Teesside Koi good?

:)
