Hello,
I have been conditioning a pair of bettas for spawning for about a week. She is behind a see through divider (has holes in it). I tried spawning them 2 weeks ago, and there was some nipping and stuff, but no spawning, so I separated them again.

This time, the female looks like she was starting to get full (of eggs hopefully).

The male has been building his bubblenest under the styro foam cup since 2 days ago, however, most bubbles keep on popping (just has a few).

This morning when I woke up to feed them, I noticed all these white eggs on the bottom of the tank. Strange though, as these were sitting just on the OUTSIDE of the female's divider. I don't know...maybe she dropped them the thrashed around to sweep them outside the divider?

I tried to search for information on what to do next, but didn't really find any.

I removed the divider up a bit, and she swam out from her divided section (from underneath), and started eating the (what I would guess) unfertilized eggs. I think that is normal that the female would eat the unfertilized eggs, right?

Just not sure what to do next. The male is kinda chasing her around right now, but no signs of spawning yet.

Thanks for any help!

the female must have laid the eggs and they were never fertilized. Fish will eat unferitlized eggs as they are very nutritious and are pretty much useless.

Give it a go in a few more weeks i guess!

I'm no betta breeder expert :(

I'm looking forward to breeding but have no experience. It would be wise to seperate them and not let them see each other IMO.

I would give them a week or so before conditionning again

and for strictly informationnal use, what are you breeding? :p

Breeding a male and female crowntail. Male looks to have double double rays.

So to any expert betta breeders out there. Should I separate them again?

When do I make the call and try a different male or different female. Looks like the bubbles under the styrofoam cup have all popped. She kind of "waits" under the cup, but when he approaches, she takes off. Then she waits under the cup again. She doesn't have the horizontal stripes she had the 1st time I attempted to breed the two, so I think she is ready this time, but not 100% sure. She still looks big eventhough she already released some eggs (when she was in the divider).

Thanks for any advice.

if they are together now as long as she has plenty of hiding places leave them but if they have not spawned after five days she will still hve eggs recondition, but don't let them see each other all the time only 15-30 minutes a day is enough, absence make the heart grow fonder.........

I had a female release her eggs like that before. It just means they are really ready to spawn. I also observed the female munching on them. I just reconditioned and tried again later. I agree with Bettaman, don't let them see each other 24 hours a day. Just a period of time daily, then isolate them.

Thanks Texaswoman, that's what I'm doing right now. They are in a divided tank (divider is one of those "Lee's " brand mesh dividers). I also decided to use one of those plastic canvas sheets (those ones you can use to make a do it yourself divider....much cheaper than buying those "aquarium" dividers) to separate them even more so they can't see each other.

He seems a bit lonely now.... well not for long! :D
