Female Platy Suddenly Dying

I would try and get a whitespot med that you can use with the bacterial med you are using.

well i went to the local pet store and had them test my water, since I thought i maybe messed up with my own testing. Sure enough, I have waaaaaaay too much nitrate. I was given some stuff to neutralize it. Also, he told me to do a 25% water change every other day and continue with my maracyn plus, because it's not ich, it's just a fungus growth. Ugh, what a nightmare. Anyway, what level of nitrate should I be aiming for? Right now I'm just trying to get it as low as possible. I tested at 30 or so for nitrate. I did the change and put in the neutralizer and Now I think I'm at about 20 or 25.

To fetch nitrates down you don' really need meds.
Water change, good gravel vac. And rinse one sponge in old tank water.
Only one sponge for now.

Also maracyn can knock water stats and knock the nitrate reading down. So I wouldn't add the nitrate stuff.

We put the stuff in, but it did nothing. Then when I poured more water it, it displaced my rocks and made the reading even higher. Our fish were getting sick really faster, so we decided to do a 100% water change and really clean out everything. It all happened so fast...I guess maybe all the medicating and dead parasites did it. Anyway, all the fish were moved to the five gallon for now. It's a little on the crowded side, but it's only for a little while and they all seem to be doing better health wise. During the process of moving the fish with the tail fungus, her fin ripped a little right where one of the white spots were. I put some stress coat in the tank and she seems to be doing all right. Poor thing. :(

At any rate, all fish seem to be happy right now. I completed the cleaning about 12 hours ago and we treated the water and put in a little bit of the bacteria booster. The betta is in there right now, since we took over his 5 gallon and he's quite happy. When can I move the fish back to the original tank? I know the betta is a rather hardy fish, but I'm pretty sure platys and mollies are too? Also, if the problem was nitrate poisoning, is that going to be a problem with moving my betta back? Should I do a 100% change in the other tank too and keep him in a fish bowl for a few days before sending him back? Thanks.

Well I had to transfer them over, I really had no choice. When I went in there, they were all alive and fine, but my molly's fins had been torn. I'm going to blame my fairly aggressive male ghost shrimp. He hadn't been fed in like 8 hours, so I'm going to assume he was feeling a bit hungry. He gets aggressive when his stomach is empty. At any rate, I moved all the fish over and they're okay I think. Stressed, but okay. The biggest problem is the molly with the frayed fin. It's not has bad as it could be and he can swim, but it's still pretty bad. I added extra salt to the aquarium to get me to the recommended dose, since none of the non-fish creatures are there. I also added more maracyn to take care of the fungus on the tail of two of my fish. Hopefully I can save this tank...

Ok.

Let me know how you get on.
Good Luck.

Make sure the fish don't have whitespot.

Peace at last has finally come to my fish situation, thank god. No deaths. However, I think one fish will not make it though the week. I just wanted to know if it was old age or something else.

He has low activity, and is resting at the bottom a lot (though upright) however whenever there's food or he wants to go somewhere else, he swims like it's nothing. His fins aren't clenched, he doesn't look skinny or bloated, and no signs of parasites or anything. He does seem to have a bit of a hump-back, however he has no other signs of tuberculosis and I've read that spine curvature can be a sign of age as well. He's a platy and we've had him for over a year now and when we got him, he was fully grown and seemed older than the other fish. Do you think he's just hitting his end?

He's not old if he's only a year old.
Liebearers can live for up to 3 years I think.

Curving of the spine can be a birth defect, injury, vitamin deficieny, old age, fish tb, internal parasites.

Can you issolate him.
If other fish had internal parasites other fish can get them even by sucking another fish poo up.
