i have 2 females and 1 male in a 10 gallon tank, the 2 females are pergant and they is fry in the tank, my orange female if huge, loke she is going to explode, she never really went thinner after her 1st fry, but wasnt removed from the male, so i asumed she was pregant again.the white female, doesnt look nearly as fat as the other, but has a clear gravid spot and has put on weith over the past 4 weeks. anyway, i was wondering if because the white female has a gravid spot but isnt fat, will she just have a handful of fry thats bigger, and reverse for the orange female, will she have lots that are tiny, i have lots of plants in the tank and i let the fry hide.the orange female often is seen alone away from the other 2, mostly hiding or on the gravel.is this signes of having fry? the male and other female sometimes chases her and she escapes by swimming fast and hding in the cave, is it normal cos of pregancy or should i be worried, i added the white female after the last fry from the orange female because one female died.they all have lived togerther for weeks with no problems what so ever, but im just making sure that it will go back to normal after she has given birth? by the way, both female were virgins when i added them so the father is the male in the tank.
(sorry if i confused you, i confused myself a bit,any help welcome, cheers) :good:

hello,
hiding is a sure sign of birth, each female is different in how many they have per month, between 6 and 20 is common,
they do not need a male for getting pregnant each month as they can store sperm for several batches without him.
fry will be the same size when born to each female platy. :)

thanks for the reply, will the female get back to normal size before having her next batch of fry, isnt it stressfull for her to be fat all the time.

The exception to the rule for fry size is when premature birth occurs. Once you kind of know your fish, you will have a routine that works for you and this will be less of a problem for you, if at all.

after birth you should be able to tell shes less "fat".
being pregnant and giving birth every 4 weeks in normal for them, stress comes from being harrased by males,
being chased around, being put in breeding traps ect.
all the best Donna :good:
