Right ok,, sorry about dodgy videoing, hard to hold torch and cam at same time

Lights were off in tank as new fish were being floated.

I got Little Miss Redtail about 6 weeks ago and a mustard gas fem. They are in together and are fine. A week ago i bought 3 new fems. While they were floating in bags Little Miss Redtail coloured up , was flaring and round the bags,, the new girls all barred up and heads down. So i thought i may have probs, but when let out all turned out fine.

Last night Ibbledibble got 3 new fems and floated them before going home. Exactly the same happened, Red flared and coloured up and was mainly paying attention to one the same colour in one of the bags. The 3 fems barred up too as soon as they saw Red.

What we are thinking is maybe Little Miss Redtail is a young male and whilst fish are in bags its all show from just seeing each other. When they are out of the bags maybe if he is a young male he doesnt have enough pheramones or scents or whatever male fish give out for the females to be interested in him.

Basicly is Little Miss redtail male or female. Or any other ideas why it only happens while fems are being floated would be appreciated,, bit of a mystery at moment.

she is deffo a PK....
not sure on male/female, but when she flares i cant see a beard...
i hav read that barring up in females is a dominanc sign?
maybe miss redtail is th diminant and the others are just barring up tooo how her there boss?

good luck

i would say shes a girl because i can see her ovipositor?

sharon
the ovipositor is not an accurate indication as my doubletail pk was bought as a female and had a very clear ovipositor (in fact modaz had attempted to spawn "her" without success) she was very happy in with the rest of the girls for about 4-5 months and then he built a bubblenest and spawned with a mystery female. so its definitely not proof!

there is a visible beard when you are there in person, not massive, but could that be due to being a juvi?

little miss redtail never bars up, if the barring was just a sign of dominance wouldn't she bar up too? or do you mean its a sign of submissiveness?

i'm certainly no expert as i seem to keep ending up with males! i have another possible suspect to get opinions on in a bit when vid and photos are uploaded. but we thought it was all a bit odd.

Sorry maybe I didn't explain it properly. Little Miss Redtail or Mr Red as it now may have to be called  gets all her/his colours come up beautifuly when the bagged up females are there,, she/he doesn't have bars like the females suddnely get when she/he is about.

So if it's def a he,, why when the females are out of bags doesn't he take much notice of them and neither them of him.....because he is too young?
