I have a female (maybe!) that I am beginning to suspect if she isn't actually a male. When I set up my ten gallon as a sorority tank she went crazy attacking the other girls and built a nice sized thick bubble nest! Things got too rough so I seperated everyone and put them all in small hospital tanks to treat all their boo-boos. Everyone is well, and I have obtained a few more girls so I was wanting to set up the sorority again, but I think I'll leave her/him out until I can distinguish if she really is a SHE! (might leave her out anyhow) The other reason I'm starting to think that she's a HE is because I have another girl in a tank next to her right now and this poor girl got so eggy that she released a whole bunch of eggs! Would she do that with no male in sight? The only other fish she has view of is the He/She fish! Well, I take that back. There is a male nearby but I don't think he's close enough for her to see...but not impossible, I guess. I'll try to get a picture of the girl/boy I'm talking about here in a little bit. She has a fairly short tail, but I know that doesn't always mean anything.

Here's some pics. They aren't the best. And she is still missing a bit of her tail from her fights in the sorority tank.

Yeah definitely looks like a male.
Surefire way to tell is if the fishy has that white spot (whatever it's called) kinda on it's belly right past the ventril? fins.

Not surefire, I had three males with that... crazy things!

Thanks guys. I had my suspicions from the start. And then when the aggression in the sorority took place I got even more suspicious. But, when I saw what happened to the red female that was next to HIM, well I pretty much figured it out. Actually he is a halfmoon. It's hard to tell with that piece of tail gone, though, but it's more obvious when he's in full flare. I need to practice on my picture taking. Will do that this weekend. I have new fishies I need pictures of anyhow, plus I'll try to get a good pic of him flaring. Now he needs a name! (good thing I didn't already give him a sissy girly name! LOL)

It's strange. I rely mostly on finnage... if you have a plakat... well, you are outta luck.

when i first looked at the pictures i first thought it was a female but then at the next picture it looked like a young male so i want to add my compliment that ,that is a young male. ;) i hope u don't mind

my lord what a stunning fish :good: i love the lilac on the tips of finnage  with envy

its got the body of a female so its no surprise to hear that u were confused

but the fins give it away the anal fin is much too long for a female hence we can conclude that its a male!

:hyper:
