In my latest 3 way divided tank which already had 2 males in the outer sides, i decided to add 2 females in the centre compartment. The males were chuffed to bits to see some female talent and have been on form all day with their flaring. However one of what i though was a female has now also begun displaying like a proper male and as now started to build a bubble nest :hyper: Which means a female and male female lookalike are in the same area, no harm has happened over the last 8 hrs appart from some serious displaying. Some pics are below of the female/male maybe! They are poor but its all i can get.

I know some females flare unsure if they have capabilities to build nests - anyone? If it is a male you will need to remove one..

The photos aren't very clear but looking at it I would say male, females can build bubble nests but it is not very common, I have never seen any of mine build one, if you can get some clearer pics esp some of it flaring that will be great :good:

Well my Betta tank has turned into chaos  I had to seperate the 2 females (one thought to be male) and then recently one of the males passed away. The female i moved then decided to drop her eggs in my community tank, she is doing fine now. What has been tought to be a male is realy a female because it got stressed with some of the movement and its colours were striped. But i let her go lose with the male while i adjusted the tank, she flared like mad at him, he then hid in the corner! Now seperated they have both built bubble nests! In my Eyes and the male bettas, she is a female but she may have some male instinct in her

that fish looks particularly male to me (that long and pointy anal fin is questionable for a female), even with the lower quality pics. it is true that females can make bubbles nests but it is also true that males can get stress stripes just like females. when it flares does it have a beard? then youd know for certain what youve got. also can you see a ovipost.? (white spot behind the anal fin?). some juvi males can have these too but would give more clues as to the sex.
im highly inclined to say its male.
cheers
