hi i posted a topic a week ago today about my female guppy giving birth to 13 baby fry it turned out to be 15, well she had them in the breeder net and i thought she had done but she was still big, a week on shes still big can see the dark gravid spot her chest is big and her back end has dropped. do you think i took her out to early??? or could she have dropped some of the fry and the others hadnt properly developed yet. i am waiting for her to drop them, i have found no other fry within the tank itself when cleaning so i know she hasnt had them yet. she is a fully grown female but she is still so big. whats she playing at??? i have another female guppy which is pregnant but shes no were near as big.

Even before giving birth livebearers are producing eggs for the next batch of fry, the reason they get bigger is not coz of the fry developing but due to the eggs developing.

So when she gives birth you have the next batch of eggs already their, which she then fertilises.

So no need to worry it will take on average 4 weeks for the next batch to develop and then your be ok to trap her again.

Do you have plants etc in your tank? If so I would leave her in the main tank to have her fry, either that or you are going to end up over run with baby fry. Guppys breed really fast and when this 4 week period is over she will probably give birth to even more than 15 with the numbers increasing with each drop of fry. I know it sounds harsh but unless you want over run let nature take its course with weak fry being eaten by the other fish. You will get some who survive.

i am going to share some with my dad who has a bigger tank and the rest go to a local pet shop who sell them on. i only have 1 for her last drop so would like a couple more from her next batch of fry, she seems happy enough in my breeders net, she eats well and it stops her from getting harassed by the men, if she has started to develop more fry they are already just over a week old then, she is as big as when she dropped her first so obviously shes going to have a few more this time. i have a fry tank which i transfer them into for better development.

thanks

thing is she lost no weight were my platy did she went really thin, she is now pregnant again and you can see the egg/fry develop inside her and she has about a week to 2week to go, but with my guppy she was big dropped her fry, didnt loose any weight and still is huge and the gravid patch still very dark on her.
