Hi,
A question about guppy behaviour. One of my female guppys gave birth like two weeks ago. Problem is she's been acting weird ever since. By weird I mean hiding a lot (she just comes out to eat) and swimming frantically up and down and against the tank walls. Sometimes she plunges into the gravel so hard that I'm afraid she might hurt herself. Is not pretty to watch. And she looks kinda scared all the time, at least that's what it seems to me, or maybe I'm a little paranoid. I understand that giving birth maybe stressful to any creature, but it's been over two weeks now and she hasn't returned to her "normal state" yet.
I added some estra Stress Coat, but I'm not sure if it helped or not.

What can I do to make her feel better?
It saddens me to see her like that. Any help will be appreciated

Thanks guys!

No that is not normal guppy behavour is she flicking and rubbing against objects, look over her body for any signs of spots, patches, any different coloured areas on the fish, can you post your test results in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph to rule water quality out first.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I don't see any spots, marks or streaks of any kind on her body. On Friday levels were normal (Nitrites 0 ppm, Nitrates 25ish ppm; I just ran out of ammonia testing liquids so I couldn't test for that) I did my weekly 25% waterchange this Saturday. Normally I do only 20% but since the birth of the fry I prefer to have my gravel as clean as possible. Right now I'm at work but on my way home I'll get a new ammonia test kit and post my results asap.

Thanks again.

P.S. My other fish are acting normal so far

I don't feel like your guppy is actually ill with something. I think the stress of birth has gotten to her.. people can go whacky sometimes, why not fish? Try putting her by herself for alittle while to relax. Maybe the males are driving her crazy.

Hi Dakota,
Thanks for your reply. I think you may be on the right track. My only male guppy has been extra horny lately. Now both females are looking for hiding places behind the powerhead. Problem is, for the time being I can't afford an extra tank and the maternity floating box is occupied with the fry at the moment. I can only think about getting a few plants (the ones I had have been dying on me) to provide extra hiding places.

Oh, and Wilder I just tested for ammonia and got 0 ppm.

Any other help will be welcome and appreciated :)

Hmm.. get a plastic one gallon kit. They come with little air pumps, gravel, and a plastic plant. Also, an undergravel filter. Handy little things. They are usually 10 dollars, probably less.

Not only does it sound like you really need one now, they can be used for plenty of things. Surprise fry dropping, ill fish, quarantine, etc. It's worth the 10 dollars.
