Is it normal for a young group of females (a group of 5) to be in a tank together and having the occasional pick at each other?

Nothing too serious just the occasional eyeing up and nipping. Is it just the beginning of a pack order forming or are they set to become worst enemies?

I don't really know how females in a group work together so any info is greatly appreciated! :good:

From what i understand it is normal to have a bit of squabbling to establish the pecking order. Keep an eye out for any one fish being overly bullied/injured or any excessive aggression. If i'm wrong one of the more knowledgeable members will correct me

Yes it's quite normal. They establish a pecking order and have the occasional spat but they generally tend to work as groups very well indeed.

As mentioned, you do sometimes get cases where one fish is picked on emrcilessly, in wich case it's kinder to separate that fish into it's own tank.

Planting the tank heavily as well as providing several hiding places or caves, is a good way to ensure agression stays low, as each girl can have her own little area to go ot if they wish.

In that case would it be ok to keep 4 as a group?

In what size a tank would you do this? I think 10 gallons is the minimum for an all female betta tank, and in there you could have 6.

200 litre tank :good:

I only ask because my lfs has 5 available as I've seen today but one is looking a bit sorry for itself

In a 200L tank you could certainly keep more than 4 ! What else in in the tank?

Yes I know that :S

I wanted to know if you can keep 4 as a group. No more, just 4, one more than 3 and one less than 5.....4..... as there are only 4 available, so would 4 work as a group number seeing as 2 and 3 doesn't?
