Just wondering if anybody has a pic of a male and female together so I can campare them. I have not been able to find any pics on the internet of females. If possible i want to get 3-4 females for my male to try to pair them up. Thanx guys :good:

Like most cichlids, a distinguishing feature between the sexes is the dorsal fin.... males are longer and pointer while a females is a little more rounded at the end with only a slight point.... some pics:

Mature Male(obv the hump gives away being male as well):

Your the man ox5477! where did you find the pics? :sly: So from what I can see, the head is the best way to sex them. That and the anal fin. will the males also develop longer finnage than the females after maturaty?

All those pics came off of google.com

Generally for all cichlids, males will have a longer and pointier dorsal fin than females. That is really this only general way to tell i know of. Yes, a hump is a give away but usually the hump only forms with mature and dominant males so you may have a male cichlid for years and it may never develop a hump.

I know in jds, females have more coloration on their gill plates but I'm not sure if this applies to the coloring on the gill plates of gt's too. Hopefully someone with more specific knowledge of gt's will give you more species specific clues
