Female Firemouth And Male Spirulus Have Spawned

my female firemouth and the male spirukus it paired up with have spawned this morning. i swa the firemouth start to lay but didnt see if they got fertilised or not. the male spirulus wont let anything near the eggs now ( even the firemouth)

how do you tell if they are fertilised or not?

If they stay white they are not fertile, if they go a creamy colour, they are fertile!

Seems we all have spawning fish right now.

yes seems we all got horny fish lol. well the eggs look a kinda creamy beigey kinda colour so im guessing they must be fertile. will prob have some strange looking fry swimming around soon ,

Yep sound fertile, well these should be a funny looking fish. I assume, unlike me, you wont be trying to save the babies and will let nature take its course?

Ive got a new tank coming so I can move my pair over and hopefully raise the fry, most likely not from this spawn, although I have to say the parents are doing a grand job of protecting the eggs, just not sure they will cope with the invasion from the fish once they are free swimming.

i will ( if they hatch) seperat a few just out of curiosity and nature with the rest. if you raise the aureus up will they be for sale?

Should be able to, fingers crossed, Im hoping to be able to catch some of this batch before they get eaten by the other fish, if not, then hopefully once the pair are in their new home, they will be able to raise them peacefully themselves.

I keep running over to the tank every 5 minutes to make sure they are still there I shall update the thread as things go along

got up this morning the eggs have been eaten. cant say im too bothered didnt fancy a load of hybrid fish really.

Blessing in diguise I guess, still would have been interesting to see how they came out. They will more likely do it again soon though.

couple of pics of the jade eye guarding the eggs. lovely dark colour change throughout. camera doesnt really pick it up too well but its got a lovely bluey-purple kind of tinge. also the eye has gone from the usual jade coloured to almost jet black.
