This morning the smallest of our sunset females died, she'd been 'quiet' ever since the thunderstorms here a few days ago and was probably pregnant (added stress?). We're gutted she's gone as we had a good ratio of females to males and they were a close knit group within our community tank.

Now we have 2 Sunset Wag (female), 1 Red Platy (female), 1 Tuxedo Mix (male and constantly chasing females) and 1 Pineapple Swordtail (male, compared to Tuxedo is 'half hearted').

Will the females be ok for the few weeks it will take for our first 5 fry to get to a size where Merlin our Tuxedo Mix takes interest? I guess it is size that matters? Our first lot are just over 2 months old (They are about a week ahead size wise) and the biggest is already trying to hang around the adult group. They all look female at this time, but after exams (Wednesday) I am going to make another check.

the ratio since swords will breed with platy is slightly out but dont worry about it, if the females have places to hide they should be ok until your fry join the group, the fry will start to show their sexes in about 2-4 weeks so it would be wise to wait and see what is male and female concerning your 5 fry

Ok, we'll keep an eye on the situation and if they appear to be too stressed out I'll add a female to the group when we go for supplies next week, otherwise I'll wait for the fry to grow and keep the females. :)

Best case scenario would be 4 females and 1 male!
