Is it okay to keep several female betta fish in a 5 gallon tank? how many would you recommend? and would they get along with other fish better than males? or anything else. such as ghost shrimp?

For a 5 gallon I'd say just get 1 nice male and some shrimp, but add the shrimp before the betta. A sorority of females in a 5 gallon can be lethal.

Can I put in the ghost shrimp with a male, or is prefered to put with a female?

Is there anything I can put with female bettas, or males?

If you get a single female betta there are a few more options. I have a 6 gallon tank that contains
1 female betta
2 male guppies
2 amano shrimp.
I'll try to get a pic.
So with a female you could have any of these with her(not all of them)
5x Otocinclus catfish
Most different freshwater shrimp would work.
Some MALE guppies.

I think rosy barbs would get a bit too big , I don't know about neon tetra's.

both to active and require at least 6

Thanks for confirming that. I think you could probably have some amano shrimp in with either a male or female because the don't breed in freshwater so you won't get overrun by them.
