i have 1 fremale betta in a community tank i was thinking about adding a few more would it be ok or will the betta alredy in there try to kill it

It depends very much on how big your community tank is. If you were to add more, then another 3 would be the best amount to spread out any bullying.

However before adding any new females you will need to remove the female that is in there and rearrange your tank making sure it's very heavily planted (this gives the girls plenty of hiding places). Then you need to add them back at the same time. The girls will then start establishing their pecking order and this can take days or even weeks. Females can at times be just as aggressive as males and you need to have a back up if things don't go well. Some people have had extremely aggressive females and the worst ones have had to be removed from the group.

Also be careful when buying girls as juvenile males often get mixed up with them.

i think i might just stick with the 1 it seems happy and eats well

and i wanted to put a divider or one of the lil tanks that you clip inside the tank and have a male betta because my mum wont let me get anymore tanks would this be ok because the people at the lfs no because it will see the other fish and this will stress it

You couldn't keep a male in one of those hang on boxes....it really would be cruel to keep him in that. Your Mum is right in saying it would stress him out too.

Again depending on the size of your tank you could divide a section off for a male. It would need to be at least 3 gals or more if that's possible.

it was the lfs that said a divider wouldnt be a good idear my mum wont let me have any more tanks to put one in

Sorry I misread what you said

Divided tanks work fine if they are big enough. There are quite a few people on here that have them set up that way and alot of our tanks are divided because we have so many males.
