Looked in the tank tonight while doing feeding round and realized our little red girl was looking a little odd. Her left gill is swollen and her face is noticeably deformed. I'm pretty sure she's been okay the last few days, but we rarely see that side of her face because she's always either facing the divider (on her right) or front of the tank, so all we ever see is her front and left side.

Her gill is normal colored, and she's acting completely normal - generally just being nutball and a bundle of energy. She jumped out of the water for dinner as normal and her and her man are doing their normal "love you - hate you" dances through the tank divider. He's looking and acting completely normal, too. She's about a year old, we've had her since she was a 3/4 inch long, and she's never had any issues. Tank is a cycled 7 gallon with normal water parameters that's been set up for two years. She was the last new addition to that tank and the other fish in the house are completely normal.

Is this something I should be concerned about? Anything I should be doing to prevent something worse? Is there a possibility that it's a tumor rather than a parasite or infection?

could she have caught it on something in the tank?
does it have a coating of slime on it? if so it could be gill flukes, im not too experienced on treating them so would be best to wait for the next reply!!
just keep the water crystal clean for now!!

agreed with above. do waterchanges and monitor her for improvement or decline. things to watch for...rapid or labored breathing. excess slime, flicking or darting, if otherwise acting normally i wouldnt worry too too much...just keep a close eye...keep clean water and hopefully you will see improvement in the injured(?) area.
incidentally, is it her gill or fin? the title is fin, your message is gill. not that id change my suggestion, but just wondering.
cheers

Yeah, I caught the title problem just now. It is her gill. I just have to figure out a way to change the post title..... I was tired and worried when I posted!

I was wondering if maybe she caught her gill on one of the plastic plants, but after a year of knowing the tank layout and never having been hurt before, I really have to doubt that she would be so careless.
