I placed a mirror next to my female betta for the very first time, just to see what she would do. She flared once, spread her fins out, then in seconds got breeding bars!!!!

Did she do this because she thought her reflection was a male and is showing she is ready to breed? Or was this excitement due to the fact she hasnt seen another betta in a long time?

I thought she would see her reflection as female and not do anything?

By any chance do the bars tell if they are old or young, because her age is unkown.

i think they can be a sign of dominancy too, i remember my dominant female doing it now and then

I dont think they have anything to do with age.. but im usually wrong :p

Mine also flares.. you'd think they would know its female and just chillax

she was exicited, either she thought it was a male betta or thought it was a female and wanted to be bossy, or was intimadated and was being submisive.
