Female betta has stripes that appear and disappear

The stripes(horizontal) in the pic could mean she is stressed, frightened or disturbed. My female had them for a few days like that after I got her. When the stripes go up and down(vertical) in direction she might be indicating her willingness to want to mate. :D :D

horizontal stripes are the base colouring of the fish. when they are stressed they sometimes lose their colouring revealing the stripes underneath. when you look at juvenile bettas (around 2 months old) they all have the horizontal striping as their body colour hasn't fully developed yet. vertical stripes do indeed indicate the female is excited, especially if there is a male in the whereabouts.

both of mine got them when i first brought them home.
they eventuly went away when they settled into their new homes.
the stripes will be vertical when she wants to breed, and is full of eggs :D

Flowerpetal got it right. The horizontal stripes are "fear" stripes. My new female had them the first day I brought her home last week. But after that she was fine and swims up to me like a little puppy begging for food.

Vertical stripes mean she's ready for betta love. :D

like i said - "when they are stressed". this "base" striping is more predominant in females than males.

i don't know why this happens but usually it probably becuase of your health i think its a sign but im not sure. never had this happen to me before.
