Hello everyone! :D As some of you may know by now, I rescued 4 beautiful little female bettas from Wal-Mart the other day. They are currently living together in my not-so-empty-anymore 10 gallon. :p So far they are getting along great...no fighting, no nipping, not even any chasing. They just hang out together at the front of the tank where I can keep a very close eye on them.

Since they are getting along so well, I've decided that I'm going to try a female betta community tank. The tank has many plants (all plastic) so far and I am soon to pick up a few caves for them to hide in. So my first question is, is there anything else they will need in the tank to make them more comfortable?

And then I was wondering about tankmates for them...if I ever decide to introduce anything else with them. ;) I was thinking Corys and Neons? Would these be ok with them as they are both peaceful species? What other species would you suggest? :/

Any other help would be great as well. I want to give these little babies the best care I can, especially after all they have gone through already.

Thanks in advance! :D

i just set one up a few days ago, and i have 2 flying fox's with them... they are very interested in each other, but dont fight.. cories should be ok also.. neons.. hmm... some people consider them fin nippers.. but i guess its possible to keep them with females... i just keep mine with bottom feeders .. i like having the bettas as the main feature of the tank...

plants and caves are good.. not sure what else you would need to put in there.

sounds like youve got a good plan

Thanks for replying nibbles!

Yeah I saw pics of your community...looks great!

Neons as fin nippers, huh? I always thought they were too timid for that. :dunno: Oh well, I think I'll go with a few Corys at the very least.

Hmm.. I wouldn't try neons, I've seen bettas eat them. But cories might work, I've got Jack in with a pair and they all get along well. That's just my two cents, as I don't have a female community and probably never will.

Try putting them together with a couple of Danios. That's what I've got in my tank. :)

i knew it was something bad between bettas and neons.. some said neons nipped bettas, others said bettas killed neons..

I think female communities work far more often than they don't if you have enough space... you just get a female every once in a while who's just mean. :) I've had zero problems with cories and otos in such a tank.

I've got a 20g with cories, a pleco, six female bettas, and some harliquin rasboras. Oh, and a bamboo shrimp. Everyone's getting on fine!

it really does depend on the personality of the females too.. i have some that cant go with others.. so definately keep an eye on them when you first put them in there.. dont want any fin nipping or anything like that happening

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Ok, then I'll skip the Neons. Harlequins are adorable, but I had a very bad experience with them... :-( And it is my firm belief that Danios need something a bit bigger than a 10 gallon to dart around in.

I think I'll go with Corys for sure, and maybe some shrimp...my lfs has Ghost Shrimp and I think they are really cute...I like the way they float around. Do you think Khuli Loaches would be ok with them too (you know me, the Loach Freak :p  )?

So far, the four females that are in the tank are perfectly fine with each other. They even look like they are schooling a bit, which is absolutely the cutest thing to see. On the other hand, if I put my other female, Polaris, in there with them, she would rip them apart. She's got quite the mean streak in her. So yeah, I know what you guys are saying when you talk about their different personalities. But so far these little babies seem to enjoy each others company...I'm still keeping an eye on them though...anything could still happen.

Be prepared to lose the ghost shrimp - I've heard many stories about bettas eating them. My bamboo shrimp is over 2 inches long, and no one bothers him.

what about guppies and female bettas? bad idea? I have some guppies and I just LOVE female bettas but I'm sure they wouldn't work together.

Good point cation...I kinda forgot about the fact that bettas like the taste of shrimps.

So I think I will go with Corys and Khuli's. I think those are both pretty safe and peaceful fish.

very bad idea, i was over at Whiskerz house one day and she had a male guppy in with a female betta and one day out of the blue the female decide she wanted to drag the poor guy around the tank by his tail, well she took off half his tail but he recover and has grown most of it back now
