Could she just be dropping eggs? The big white lump is right between her ventrals. I have never seen a female drop eggs before so if that's all this is, sorry!! Her breathing is labored, and she is staying at the surface not moving much. I just put her in a 1 gal hospital but didn't add anything yet.

How long has she been like this?

She could be dropping eggs. I have seen something quite similar on my own when they were dropping eggs. But it looks abnormally large, and seems to be sticking to her. They do have somewhat labored breathing when dropping eggs, though.

Unfortunately, if she's having problems, then there's not much more you can do for her than to make her comfortable. Try adding about 1/2 teaspoon of aquarium salt and keep a close eye on her.

Well, whatever it is it's killing her. She's stuck at the bottom now and can't get up for air so I don't think she's going to last much longer. I lowered the water level to a couple inches, but she's still not really making much of an attempt at getting to the surface. I just hope it doesn't happen to the other 3 girls.

Sorry, R.I.P.

I figured that might happen. One of mine dropping eggs had the same thing. Turned out (during the autopsy) that they had gotten stuck and started to rot inside of her. It happens QUITE rarely, but it does happen.

Well, if that was the case I guess there wasn't much that could have been done anyway. Thanks for trying to help. I wonder if there is anything that can be done to prevent that. probably not. Now I'm just going to have to keep an eye on the other 3 female bettas to make sure that loosing that one doesn't mess things up too much till I can get another 1 or 2 or 3 and get her/them through the quarinteen period. They have been together for 5 or 6 months so hopefully there won't be any problems in the ranks. Maybe I'll just get one and a couple ottos to take care of my algae problem.
