Hello, I'm looking for help concerning my female betta.
Today, I looked at the tank and noticed one of my fish, lay on the sang and a snail eating her! She wasn't alive, she was just alot of bones, and she still has her head and a bit of finnage, so i thought her decaying in the water could of upset this other fish.
Well i was counting the fish, i have 10, but now 9 due to the dead fish and i noticed there was only 8, i searched around the tank, and found one of my 6 month old females hiding under an object in the tank. she didn't come up for food ither, I went to net her but she'd swim and fall back down to the sand. I thought it could be swimming bladder but its not like she can't go up or down, or shes lob sided she swims fine but then sinks to the sand and stays their rapidly breathing.
I'm unsure why she's showing this behaviour?
Details:
Tank size: 88l/19G
Tank mates: 9 females (discluding the dead one)
Tank stats: I don't know, can't afford a test kit atm.
All other fish acting fine.
I've put the fish into a breeding trap, now shes swimming but when she's in the tank she just sinks down and breaths rapidly?
Thanks for any help.

Hi, I had the same problem with mine not so long ago but never found out the cause or the illness. By the time I had noticed with mine, she was getting worse rapidly and only lasted another 12 hours.

Fingers crossed you have better luck and she makes it through. :good:

Awww, it's a pain when you can never find out what the illness is.
Thankyou Big_eyes, i'll keep you updated, hopefully she'll be ok :)

Remove the dead fish from the tank as they can pollute the water and cause desease.

Immediate water change and increase aeration.

Take as sample of your tank water to the lfs and ask them to write the readings down for you.

Does the fish look bloated.

I think I would add a bacterial med to the tank.

The third type of infection produced by Aeromonas is by no means the least. This form is often the most virulent (potent) and can be rapidly fatal. This insidious form does not produce any noticeable external ulcers. The most notable feature is a behavioral change in which the infected fish generally become listless and lethargic. Some fish may lose color or appear darker. The fish do not feed, frequently seem off balance and may sink to the bottom laying on their sides. The course of the disease is rapid, and by the time the behavioral changes are noticed, the entire population of a tank may succumb, sometimes in a day or so. This is an internal infection, with the bacteria being found in the kidneys and blood of these fish. The bacteria produce potent toxins that account for the severity of the disease.<

Thanyou for your reply.
I'll add an airstone into the tank, luckily i have a spare one.
No, the fish doesn't look bloated, shes always been a big fish and liked her food but no bigger than usual. She's swimming around a little more but now i can't see her, i noticed her before going into the cave and didn't see her come out.
Will have a look in my cupoard to see if i have any bacterial meds.
That sounds like an awful infection. I've removed the dead fish, and have just took out over 50% of the water.

Ok.
Let me know how you get on if you don't mind.
Good Luck.

Found some Myxazin in the cupboard, will treat with that. But theres only about enough for me to treat today. Hmm, i'll see if my mum will get me some more offline. (my lfs' don't sell it)

I did a 70% water change and added back in dechlorinated water, and added the myxazin i also added a big airstone, and just by doing that all the buy have livened up!
The fish that was lying around is swimming more, will have to see how she goes on.

Ok.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the help Wilder, I've been using myxazin on the tank the past few days, and another big bottle came today. Fish seem alot healthier and happy with the airstone and since the treatment started.
Thanks alot! :good:

Ok.
Still keep a close eye on them.
Good Luck.
