I just bought a female beta from the local pet store because she looked sad in her little cup.

I have three platies, two cherry barbs, and a pleco in my ten gallon tank. Do you guys and girls think she will do well here?

P.S. I love her

Hi,

Welcome to the forums! I don't know much about betta's but what kind of pleco do you have? I'm afriad I don't think she'll do too good, your tank is overstocked and she'll be stressed, as will the other fish.

Hoepfully someone will be along in a minute with some advice.

I think its overstocked personally.

I thought bettas was ok with community fish, i thought it was just betta males you cant put together cos they fight.

Really though you should not be adding fish, you should be taking a couple out

Its just a common pleco... its under two inches still and I am upgrading to a 20 gallon tank soon.

I was mainly just concerned with behavioral compatibility

I think the betta should be fine with them (get a second opinion thought to be 100%, if i was you though, i would upgrade asap :)

I'd rehome your common pleco, they can grow up to 12" and need AT LEAST a 55 gallon tank. His growth will be stunted in a 20 gallon. Sorry. There's lot of smaller pleco's, I'm sure your LFS would be happy to swop him.

Maybe a bristlenose would be better

I have heard this a lot. Our LFS said that they needed 10+ gallons so I would hope that they would take him back since it was their bad advice that created the situation.

She should be fine temperament-wise.
But be prepared to offer her her own tank in case they don't get along. She really should be though. Just be sure the fish isn't male. Then you might have to evaluate the personality.

Thanks Monica

Concerning the Pleco I think I am going to take him back and see about getting a sub-type that doesn't get as big. Its a shame though, he was probably my favorite fish in the tank haha

She should be perfectly fine, personally I think people are way too paranoid when it comes to these fish they are not as aggressive as people make them out to be, I have been keeping them for 4 years have had males and females in community situations and have never had a problem except for occasional spats. Put her in the tank, keep an eye on her and enjoy her, and rehome the pleco they grow FAST!
