Feeding Otos

Can otos survive purely on algae? I was thinking of getting a couple to help with my algae problem. I know I'll have to supplememnt their diet with algae wafers after that, but is this enough for them?

My ottos eat algae, and also feed off whatever sinks to the bottom. I stopped bothering with algae wafers 'cuz the other fish in the tank claim them as theirs!

Alright cool. They'll be living off the algae for a while anyway, because there's a lot and they're quite small.

i would suggest you give your otos some kind of other food besides the algae.

shrimp pellets work nicely as a supplement if you dotn' want to go wtih algae wafers. But it's not a good idea to let them eat solely your algae until the algae's all gone.

Well I feed my fish shrimp pellets anyway, so I guess they'll get some leftovers.

I usually stick a piece of cucumber (skinned, seeds cut out) in my tank for 2 days a week. this is just to help add some extra/different food to their diet

Interestingly... I find my husband's Oto loves the skin of the zucchini. Poor guy, he doesn't like it when I remove the remains of the old piece. But, soon after he's happily munching on the new zucchini piece.

I recently started feeding my Otos fresh asparagus they love it. I do cut the woody end off and blanch it for about 30 seconds in boiling water than stick it in a bowl of ice water to stop it cooking. I then put a lead weight around it and sink it to the bottom they attack it within about 5 minutes. The Otos tend to stay on the stems while my andgelfish will come by nd nibble on the leaf shoots. I have also gotten them to eat carrots, Zuchinni, Cucumber, and Jicama.

My Otos *love* cucumber and zucchini! I put a slice in and they happily, busily, and crazily munch away on it! They also eat the variety wafers (some form of algae wafers) I throw in for the Corys, as do the Neons (Who knew Neons were bottom feeders?).

Thank god for that, thought is was just my greedy little sods that did that, also when algae gets knocked loose off the leaves of plants they eat that (Chubby smilie needed).

Ohhh, asparagus! I must remember to buy some the next time I go grocery shopping. *wonders if her shy pearl gourami will eat that as well*

P.S. And Jicama! I think my mom would kill me if she found out I was feeding that to my fish, and not to myself. Ahh well, the privileges of being married.

interesting, for my otos, i put in the seedy part of the cucumber (middle part) since nbodoy touches the outer "meat" portion!

Wow, I had no idea this many fresh vegetables could be fed to fish! Doesn't it cause gastro-intestinal complications though if given too freely?
