I went fishing the other day and went to walmart to buy some frozen bait. A huge bag of shrimp is like 3 dollars, where as a small bag of prawn at the pet store is like 4$-5$.

Would it be safe to just buy the large bag of shrimp and feed them to my oscar as occasional treats?

not sure if there the same but ive jus started buying prawns.

big bag for less than £2 and ever since my oscar tasted em, i have to be careful when leaning over the tank cos he thinks i have prawns and jumps like crazy at me lol

thats how much he likes em.

eats my finger too cos i think it must look prawn-ish too him.

EDIT - how is your little guy now neway? probably not so little im guessing.

Haha he is about 5 inches right now and has beautiful salmon pink coloring around the edges of his tail and dorsal fins. He has had this coloration ever since I have been feeding him shrimp. :)

nice, the other guy who posted up here, with the oscar in his sig. i have a 8" one just like yours :) shes lovely and ive taught her various tricks etc. can feeding oscars certain foods influence their colouring ? also when ifeed my oscars something new they spit it out through their gills until they get used to it, is that normale? or not.

gorgeous arent they?

Hercs about 7" now.

i hadnt heard about the change in colour but i kno some foods claim to help "bring out the fishes colours".

and yea the gill things normal apparently.

worried me a little at first too.

couldnt believe how high he jumped earlier tho and the splash he made was crazy lol. i got soaked.

hard to get in my tank at the mo tho because the light is resting directly on the perspex/ drip trays.

have to get some more pics of him up!

5 inches is a slight improvement since the last ones!

Prawns will help bring out the reds and pinks of fish. Flamingos are pink because they eat shrimps :)

However I don't recommend feeding them on just prawns, but you already know that :good:

I feed my Oscar (and other cichlids) everything from pellets, meal worms, earthworms, prawns to whitebait crickets and peas !!

Yeah I am going to try to pick up some crickets and maybe some worms, but whenever I fed him prawn the edges of his tail and dorsal fins are bright pink. So pretty! :D

he is close to 6 inches and I can't wait until he gets bigger. I've had him since December. Should he be larger?

i was thinking this the other day about boilies you go fishing with, they're pretty high quality I bet you could use those too
