when cleaning tank noticed there were 4 or 5 fry (we think they are platies) tried to catch some of them. however i have noticed that there are still 2 in the main tank that i am unable to catch, the tank is heavily planted. just wondering what to feed the fry, do they need special food? we have only got normal aquarium fish food. please help!

Your lfs probably has bite size food for fry. Or you can take your current flake and grind it to a fine powder. I've done that b4 with gup fry and it worked out fine.

Also those in your main tank that is heavily planted probably won't need as much food as the others. The reason is that there are probably tons of microscopic critters & algae too small for you to see or for the adults to mess with in your water and on or around your plants for the fry to snack on. And your adults are probably droping lots of crumbs for the fry to catch. I'd say if your gonna feed the fry in your main tank do so sparingly so that you don't foul the water and mess up the careful balance your trying to maintain for plants and fish. I've raised many batches of fry on nothing but flake food crushed into a powder. It's the cheapest easiest way to feed fry.

yea, I've had fry survive in my main tanks that I didn't ever know were there till they were big enough not to get eaten. They probably just snacked on left overs.

thank you both very much. i'll grind some especially fine bits of flake for em next feeding time.

form experience ive found that specialised fry food(preferably spirulina based) help the fry develop better that just crushed flakes
