Hi all

I have 6 tetras, 6 danios, a shrimp, a bristlenose and 3 clown loaches (small - but might be 2 looking at the state of one of them soon :( )

Just wondering how I know how much food is enough, I'm worried the clowns don't get any because the rest is gobbled up in seconds.

There is so much advice saying not to overfeed that I'm wondering if im underfeeding!

Any good indicators to go by?

Its common to fee clown 3 to 4 times a day small amounts-maybe pellets to get to them first! :D

Sinking pellets for the clowns. What size is your tank?

Thanks, I'm coming to the conclusion that my stockist doesn't actually have clue.

Tank is 60 litres, he suggested they'd be fine on the flake fish food that I give the rest of them...

Not good ab\dvice. Clowns can get to 12 to 15". A 60 litre tank is between 12 and 15 US gallons and is not suitable for a clown loach never mind 2. Also, they prefer to be in a school of at least 5. I have included a site address that will give you a lot of information on loaches.

I've read so many of these sites now (and only wish I had before taking advice of the stockist.

But what am I supposed to do now? I have three in the aquarium?!

Well I would go and have a talk with the management/ownership of the store and propose that you trade the clowns for equivalent value of more compatible fish. They should not balk at this as they did give you some pretty bad advice.

Thanks vic, would it be a complete disaster / bad news to keep them though; there seems to be many different opinions around. I heard that they'll only grow to the size of their environment?

They grow slowly, but being kept in such a tank will inveitably lead to their early deaths. When you consider that clown loaches cared for properly have a lifespan measured in decades rather than years that's pretty unfair on the fish.
There are other loaches that grow to a considerably smaller size and would be great in your tank - Zebra Loaches and Khuli Loaches for example only get to about 4 inches. A few of either of those would be fine in your tank.

Yes their growth will be STUNTED by their environment and their lifespan will also be "stunted".
