I'm placing my male and female into the breeding tank tomorrow, and I just want to make sure everything is right.
I just have one question - do you feed the male when he is in the breeding tank with eggs/fry?
Thanks :)

hi some people say yes and some people say no

to be on the safe side i didnt feed my male and all the eggs hatched on the 27th and all are free swimming some people say feeding him will trigger a pesonse and he may eat the eggs/fry so i didnt feed mine lets just say yester day he was glad to be out lol

I thought it would be the reverse effect - feeding him will make him not want to eat the fry because he's full
Anyways, thank you for your reply :good:

It's really dependent on the male, squiggling fry resemble his natural food... So if he is "in eating mode" he may just decide to make the fry into lunch. They aren't complicated thinkers with reasoning skills, it's all instinctive. Also fish don't STOP eating when they are "full" many will eat themselves to death... So I wouldn't count on his ability to recognize that he is well fed.

They are simple creatures, sometimes it is beneficial to give them one "task" at a time!
A lot of animals fast while they are raising young, a humpback whale doesn't eat all winter while she raises her calf in tropical seas, then heads back up to cold water to feed. Alligators do the same thing, as do many domestic hens... If the male is well conditioned (well fed for a couple weeks prior to breeding) he has plenty of reserves

I suggest NOOOOO, becuz the male then might think that the fry's are food and eat them., i wouldn't take the risk.
