I have a fairly new tank of 6 Sterbai Cories and 6 Guppies and they have been in the tank for a couple of weeks now and I have found myself fretting and worrying about pretty much everything!
A while ago I mentioned that two of my Cories arrived minus pectoral fins (in fact, one has no fins at all down one side) so I treated with a course of Melafix and they seem to be improving, if my eyes do not deceive me there are some stumps there now.
The thing is, the one missing the most fins has always been a bit quieter than the others (we named him Jim), but he does join the others when rushing around the tank or swimming into the filter stream. He doesn't, however, seam to be eating with the others (at least I have not seen him do it.) He seems to slowly shuffle towards the food, then just ignore it and carry on going
When I feed the fish, I usually put in some flake for the guppies and then a small disk of food for the cories. The cories get a couple of minutes while the Guppies are distracted to themselves but when the Guppies find the disk, it is a bit of a feeding frenzy and often the Cories will be outcompeted. The fish get a cube of bloodworm once a week, which is a bit of a frenzy from the start! and also some peas occasionally.
So, I guess my questions are twofold:
1. Can I feed the Cories in a way that prevents the Guppies from taking most of the food? Does it even matter? I have noticed that sometimes the Guppies break the disks into bits, which in turn seems to make them easier for the Cories to eat)
2. What can I do about Jim? He doesn't seem to be wasting away yet, he picks at some of the plants occasionally but I worry that he doesn't feed on the food I give them.
Sorry this is a bit wordy!
