Ok I got my lovely little Betta last week; I asked in the shop what to feed him as in my experience feeding the same as the shop to begin with is better and then changing the diet once the fish is settled in.

Anyway I got some granuales - he spit them out; tropical flakes (also recommended by the shop) he spit them out; and finally I got "Tetra Betta" - he spit that out as well. I've been feeding him blood worms just so that he has something.

How can I get him to eat the other food; do I stop giving him the blood worms and keep going with the other stuff until he eats it?

Also how much do I feed him? (I know it's as much as he'll eat within a few mins or something but approximately how much should he eat) - I'm asking as I also got guppies (different tank) and between the guppies and the betta they barely eat anything - I'm used to big goldfish who hoover everything up within seconds.

I've had a few fussy bettas but none have been able to resist the Betta Pro pellets, i've had little success with the betta flakes or tropical flakes.

It wouldnt hurt to try not feeding him for two days, then offer the Tetra Betta. But I definately recommend the pellets :good:

As to how much, it really is just how much they will eat in a couple of minutes, mine tend to have 4 or 5 pellets each at a time.

Thank you :).

No where seems to sell the pellets as that is what I was looking for; I guess I'll have to buy them online :(

I just like to know a rough average of how much he shold be eating at a time; I will get the hang of him eventually I just like to make sure; so thank you for that too :).

They are impossible to find here too, not sure why as most Betta owners I know use them. Maidenheads tend to have them if you have one local.

I always buy from ebay, they are really inexpensive & last a long time.

Good luck with your betta, they are such lovely fish pets to own

I've just bought some on e-bay. We don't have a maindenheads. Lets see what happens when I get them :) hopefully he'll eat them.

I'll have to post a picture of him when I actually put them on the computer as I think he is gorgeous (he's cream coloured with pink fins which are tipped and stripped with what looks like white/clear - but when in the light it's neon blue. He's a very macho man with pink and neon hahaha.

My pellets arrived yesterday :) he likes them yay :). He wasan't sure on the first two but after that he was fine; although when they go up to the side of tank he doesn't like them until they have been pushed back into the middle haha.

I just fed my Betta half of a pea. I cut the half into little pieces after taking the skin off. One of the pieces though is to big for him to put in his mouth so he is just carrying it around with him. It's actually kind of comical. He'll spit it out and try to eat it again.

lol; when I was feeding mine bloodworm he'd have one sticking out of his mouth looking like he was smoking

I currently have two bettas. One of them however, is a terribly picky eater. Ive tried flakes, every sort of betta pellet under the sun, or rather the LFS, and all he wants in blood worms. I event tried not feeding him for a few days. Still no go on anything low with protien. So currently hes on a mixture of freeze dried blood worms, tubifix worms, and brine shrimp. Think this will be ok? Any suggestions?

Its a real risk of gut compaction and bloating in the long term with that diet.

Have you really tried the Hikari Betta Bio Gold pellets ? They are the only ones that virtually all Betta's seem to like. Most LFS do not have them, but they are cheap and easily available online, and last for ages.

We have a very, very fussy Betta, and he likes the Hikari pellets too. Amazingly, he also likes small pieces of shelled frozen pea (defrosted, obviously). I was astounded when he liked it, as he is so fussy, and I was so sure he would spit it out again ... but he didn't. Pea is also great for their guts, and offsets a high protein diet to a certain extent.

Freeze dried stuff doesn't have all the nutrients that frozen stuff does. See if you can get some frozen foods for him and the hikari pellets - mine loves them. I had to buy mine on e-bay and they were cheap; even with postage and packing.

Yep tried those pellets. Won't touch them. I will try the pea trick, see if that will help keep him regular. I avoid frozen or live food because they run high risk of carrying diseases.
