I do not know if it is male or female!! We purchased this locally not knowing what it was (we knew it was a catfish of sorts!!) We refer to him as a he though! He is a very beautiful example of a feather fin, and the only reason we are looking to sell him is because he insists on eating our baby BN plecs. Apart from that he really is very peaceful and has quite a cheeky character
