I have 6 Zebra danio's and 3 rock shrimp in my 18g (uk) tank which is currently cycling (amonia is at zero, nitrite is around 0.6) and I am doing water changes twice a week to keep the nitrite below 1ppm.

One thing that I have noticed is that the belly on 3 of the 6 fish is quite abit larger than when I bought them. They all seem to be happy and very active and I can't see any sticky own scales so I don't think that it's dropsy.

I feed them twice a day with a very small pinch of flake food which seems to be gone in seconds (nutrafin max which says enough food to last 2 minutes). A couple of weeks ago I fed them some daphnia and they didn't last long either.

Are the fish ill?

I pretty sure it's just overfeeding, try to cut down on it or miss a few days of feeding.
Cutting back on food always helps , kind of like dieting , fish can go with out food for several days with out a problem. IMO i think that your fish may just be consipated , give them blood worms and anything that has some sort of greens like spiruna, it may help. I have a platty who i was sure was pregnant, put her in the breeding box for several days on the 3rd came back home to find lots of black feaces. Funny huh that inside her it looked like fry eyes.Anyway hope this helps. :)

Thanks Guppylover for the reply.

Could they suffer similar affects from being under fed?

I really am not feeding them very much and they always seem hungry going for every little bit of floating matter and searching the bottom of the tank for food.

Thanks Mo99. I never thought of that. What is Spiruna?

Its a form of alge, which have been made into flakes, actually i think you can get them in wafers and tablets, my guppies, cories, shrimp seem to like them , though neons don't . I guess its like having a balanced diet. Kids as you know do't liek much green fish seems to be the same. :)

My money is on 3 male and 3 female danios...

The females are plumper than males and get REALLY fat as they fill with eggs (if they feel happy to spawn)

the males are a lot more streamlined.

Thanks for the help, I will give the algie flakes a go, it may help.

I will also keep an eye out for eggs.
