Hey fella

just about to buy a Juwel Rio 400 and really want it to look nice like your tanks, been reading all your journels....amazing stuff!!! infact if mine looked about 20% of yours i would be pleased.

just wondering how you would go about setting up a 400litre tank? what plants? layout etc? It would also hold a lot of fish :D

Any info would be great B)

cheers

Paul

Plants and layout are pretty much personal preference. Research into a layout and plants that you would like to use then put that thought into motion.

You need to make a decision on substrate, filtration and Co2 first though as I am sure you know.

Ignore this post if you just want the view of Jimbooo though.

I would agree with ChrisP, decide what you want re substrate lighting and CO2. Planting and the rest will prob have to wait until you've worked out those.

Here are my thoughts on those three.

Substrate - flourite, laterite, eco-complete, and the ADA one (not sure of its name) are all good, vary in cost quite a bit. I've only got one planted tank (and its small at that!) so cant comment specifically on all three or which would be best for such a big tank, but if it were me I would use laterite, it'll probably work out cheaper in the long run as you mix it with gravel, so it goes further. That said if money is no object and I mean NO object get the ADA soil (you can get it here) there are different types depending on the fish you'll keep.

Lighting - first read the pinned lighting article, that'll give you a good basis for what you'll need. But for a tank of this size, 2WPG should be the goal, haven't the first clue how you'll get that thou, you'll prob need to cram as many bulbs as poss under the hood! Obviously get reflectors for each and decent plant light bulbs.

CO2 - unless you like mixing up DIY yeast stuff twice a day I would get pressurised. Either a kit from ebay or get a new regulator and a pub type cylinder (also from ebay) as you'll probably need to pump in quite a lot, i.e. have a high bubble rate so the normal 500g cylinders probably wont last you very long!

Hope that helps :) would you mind if I asked what your budget is for this project? We can then tailor our advice to meet your needs and wallet. No point recommending the ADA glass beetle diffuser if you've only got 200quid to play with!

cheer themuleous

not decided on budget yet, i usually end up going over the top, my problem always has been i'm very impatient and end up spending money like water

my current tanks seem to grow plants really well and i dont use any ferts, soils, co2 etc etc, just plain gravel, stick them in and they grow. so i am totally new when it comes to a poper setup, which i why i thought it about time to ask the experts.

As far as fish and cycling etc i think i'm quite good, but on the planted side i am a total newbie

cheers

better late than never hey... sorry been manic at work today.

to be honest i'd replicate the setup in my rio180. laterite/ada aquasoil or some thing like that on the substrate i've only used laterite/gravel so would need to ask some questions myself before going with any of the other options, add another 2 tubes to the lighting, pressurised co2 plus ada beetle diffuser.

it's really hard to advise on plants my friend i have no experience with such a large tank and would be learning myself as i went along. i'd definatly include a couple of amazon swords and my big java fern (used to be gf225's)

thats about all i can tell you really. i have an idea how things would pan out but it would be wrong of me to claim to know what will work and what wont as it's new to me as well. the depth would be my main concern. glosso etc.. may not carpet properly due to the distance from the lights but who knows, there's only one way to find out.

sorry i cant be more usefull. thats the thing with this hobby, no two tanks are the same a tank twice the size of my current one would behave totally differently.

ok cheers for the advice, one i have got the tank i think i will experiment a bit, let it get established a bit then go about planting it. I really dont want to risk the fish so will take things slowley

i will let you know how i get on :D
