Fantail Fish Fins Dissappearing?

Hi all,

I recently moved my two fantail fish, one Redcap, one Blackmoor, into my parent's room as I'm establishing a new aquarium for them in my room. I've not been able to get in and see the fish much over the last week that they've been in the new room, so what I discovered today has come as a shock. I went in and sat watching the fish and noticed that the redcap's once tall Dorsal fin was now almost gone, there is only a very small amount left, and there appears to be a couple of bits sticking out. All in all he looks very messy.
There are red dots in close formation around the base of his Dorsal fin on each side, and a similar, larger group of red dots near the base of his Caudal fin. His behavior appears pretty standard for his character, he is active, not dosile, and displays a healthy appetite. I have seen him 'flick' once today, but as I say it's only once, so I cannot presume that he has been doing this all day.

I thought perhaps it could be Finrot or internal bacteria? If so, I have some Interpet Anti-Internal Bacteria treatment that apparently treats gillrot, dropsy, ulcers and septicamia, howver I'm unsure if this will do the job. I have given a healthy dosage of Aloe vera stress coat and aquarium salt as well as a 20% water change.

Any suggestions on what the problem might be or steps to take to resolve it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

what is tank size?
water stats?
any reddening of the gills?

anything else different about the fish, even the slightested change?

Size of tank and water stats like has been asked for.
The fish is suffering from septicemia hard to cure once it advanced.

Thankyou for the quick reply. Sorry for not replying sooner I went to test and watch the fish for any other changes.

The tank is a 54L Juwel Rekord aquarium. It contains two fantail fish, one blackmoor, one redcap, each about an inch and a half in length.
The water stats are as follows:
Nitrite: 2.0ppm
Nitrate:10ppm
PH:8.2
Ammonia levels I could not get as I seem to have lost the Ammonia results card since yesterday. I am using an API Master Test Kit, the tube of water comes up as the sort of yellowy green you see on fluorescent jackets.

I'm sorry if that seems ambiguous, but I can't seem to find the card anywhere.

I know the nitrite level is high, it has been for two months now. I have made posts on the forums some time ago and after a three page discussion between members we decided that all the things I had done to reduce the nitrite were the right things to do, but the tank was just too small, causing the high levels.
To fix this I recently purchased a 130Litre 4ft Aquarium, it has been establishing for 24 hours now with an external Fluval 305 filter that has been established for 9 days.

There is no other change on the fish, however on further inspection i've noted that the red spots, which appear quite angry and sore, run along the top of the fish on both sides of the dorsal fin, and are patched on the bottom of the fish around the claudal and anal fin areas.

The gills are not immediately red, they are red from some lights, if that makes sense. The redcap's skin is a strange one, it looks white from some angles and patched red from other angles.

Thankyou for your help lilfishie :good:

I would put them in the bigger tank now or you are going to lose them.
Look under ammonia and nitrite poisoning.

Thanks Wilder. The tank water has only been in the tank 24 hours. However, the fluval 305 filter was running in the old tank for 9 days, and so has been cycled.

Do you still advice introducing them into the new tank, and if so, what is the best way to test the water before I introduce them? Just using the test kit?
Also, after moving them, would you advise treating with Anti Internal Bacteria Med?

Thank you for your help.

Yes use the med.
Check ph and temp, add some water from the old tank to the new one then it should be ok to move them.
Good luck.
