i read this before i posted so dont flame me for not researching first http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=13664

ok heres the deal first i need clear pics of male/female fancy guppies... i know it said look at the anal fin and it showed a pic... and i THINK i know what it means, but more pics would help...

2nd they are going in a community tank, some very calm schooling fish are in there(dunno names i 4get but it starts with an s :) ) and a pleco and these little neon fish... now this isnt my tank its my aunts and its downstairs...

now it said in that link above that i could let them breed in the same tank and some fry would live... whats the adverage ratio for something like that? now the tank doesnt have plants but id put some in once i get the fish(i have plants)

anything else i should know? my plan is this buy 3 or 4 2 females and either 1 or 2 males... then put them in the community tank and just let um go at it

I don't have any pictures of my male and female guppies (That are clear anyway!) but here's one I found on Google...Picture. The male is on the top, and the female is on the bottom....you can see the male's fin is pointed, and the female's is fan-shaped. Also, you can notice the gravid spot on the female.

I don't really know what the average ratio would be...I'd think if you had mostly calm fish, you'd have a lot of fry survive. When I had my guppies in a community tank, I'd usually get about 15-20 fry. Are you planning to put the fry in a breeding net, after they are born?

If you do, you can feed them Liquifry, or Hikari First Bites for the first few weeks, then move on to very finely crushed flakes. Sometimes I'll give mine Crushed Freeze-dried bloodworms and Brine Shrimp too.

Good luck with them!

The pics you have in your link are about as clear as they can get; with males and females the minimum number is 1male per 2females although in my experience it is better to add an extra female for every male you get i.e 2males per 5females or 3males per 7females as this helps dispel confrountation between the fish, particually if you happen to get a very dominant male.

What size is the tank, how many fish does it have in it and what are its water stats(ammonia, nitrate, nitrites)?
It is posible the tank is already stocked to its limits(meaning it can't handle anymore fish) or doesn't have suitable water quality conditions for them...

well change of plans kinda... my aunt dont want them... so imma still buy them put put them in my tank... currently its a 40gal breeder tank(big footspace) and only has 2 plecos in it...

no im not useing a breeders net... i wanted them to give birth in the tank and let nature take its course...

since the tank will be a 40gal, how should i feed the fry? i cant use that liquid fry food kuz well its a big ass tank and i doubt theyd get it...

well heres 2 pics i found from google...

to me other then the females size and that black spot i cant really see a difference... the males anal fin looks the same as the females :(

Hmmm....okay. I'd just put in finely crushed flakes for them, or you could try the Hikari First bites too. They are pretty smart, they should figure it out in a few days.

I don't know what to tell you about the fins then...basically, the male's is pointed and thin, and the female's is rounded. In those pictures, you can see how the male's fin is closer to the body, and isn't very wide, while the female's kind of extends out, in a fan shape.

Sorry I couldn't help more :/

thx anna...

it might have to wait a week or something... the pet stores guppies were few and sick looking... ill wait till next batch
