In the process of making some calls today to the Dallas, TX SPCA and Humane Society today, I had a really long discussion with a rep from both of those organizations. I was extremely surprised to find out that we aren't the only batch of folks fighting for the rights of fish.

After I filed my complaint on a store in the mall there, I brought up the subject of WalMart, and how they treat their fish. I told her how completely helpless we all feel with regards to doing anything about how they are horribly mistreated. She went on to give me some VERY good news. She said that there is a national representative assigned SOLELY to the treatment of bettas within their organization (the H.S.) - NOT fish in general- JUST bettas. (They do have reps for fish in general, which I'm going to see if we can get them involved too, cuz it's not just bettas that need help, it's everyone). She also told me that they have begun bringing the Health Department into a lot of places that fish and reptiles are sold because of health concerns to humans from the animals - which will help the fish also - because if these places are getting them from shady places or from places who keep them in shady conditions they will put the clamp down on them too! She also told me that there is lots of legislation going on to include fish and reptiles, etc. in animal cruelty laws in this country. IT'S ABOUT DAMN TIME, that's all I have to say.

The guy who is the betta rep has done some amazing things for them and she gave me his contact information - I'm currently waiting for a call back from him. SOOOOO...... I'm going to sick this guy on WalMart. That's why it's CRITICAL that if you've witnessed nasty conditions at ANY WM store at any time and/or have any pictures of fish that have come from there who were in rough shape, PLEASE PLEASE go to this post and share them with me:

If you feel better about PM'ing them to me, have at it - as soon as I post this, I'm going to clean out my full messenger box.

PLEASE share your info with me. The more we have to stack against them, the bigger case we'll be able to build agains them.

Does the people you are talking to work in Canada too? I was just wondering because I havent seen anyone post in that thread that was from Canada except me....

woohoo! that is awesome news, one in the win column for the betta, and all mistreated fish. it has to start somewhere. :)

I will certainly ask him if they have something similar in Canada.
You know - now that you say that... I think I remember him saying on his voicemail message that he was the "North American" rep. I'll find out for you and let you know. If he doesn't cover Canada, I'll find some info on who might.

Thanks Bettamom, There is another place ( the place I got Twist from ) that keeps there bettas in the cups you can buy at the dollar store with no lids. Some of the bettas were in these containers with lids and the water smelled like rotten eggs so its not just wal mart I want to go after but this other store too. The name of the store is "Petcetera" If anyone has heard of it...

That is great news bettamomma, well done  !(also well done too for all the other peoples hard work too :flex: !)

Yep - I want to also go after other stores eventually too.
I want this guy to sort of make a meaningful example to other smaller stores, that if we can take on WalMart and win, they better clean up their acts too.

They ALL make me sick.
Uugh

:kana: So glad you're back. Some members have been going through BettaMomma withdrawal without you around. :D

Now on a serious note. Do I have this right? There is a NATIONAL representative for bettas with the Humane Society? The more I think about the store where I got Fozzy (RIP) and Vince, the more I think they need to be reported. Did you just contact the Humane Society and they put you in touch with him?

I know this store was in trouble several years ago for importing exotic animals that were illegal, seems like they might need another wake up call.

LOL How funny.

Yup - you have it right on. They have a sole employee dedicated ONLY to fighting for bettas. How cool, huh? :D

I would post his info right here, but I think he would get SLAMMED with calls and be upset with me for posting his info. But - if you call your local Humane Society and tell them what you're calling for they will either route your info where it needs to go, pass on the info to him or give you the info to contact him yourself.

Also, if you go to http://www.spca.org - see if there is a branch of that organization in your area (they don't have one here or I'd be spending all my waking non-working hours volunteering there) you can report them to that place too. They're VERY good about following up on things.

Great! I'll do another check this weekend at the LFS and then if they haven't cleaned up their act, and their betta bowls I'll be ready for them. :hey:

Exactly.

Well, that's great news, BettaMomma. Good work on all sides. I'm going to call our local HS and discuss it with them a little further. For everyone who is thinking of doing hte same - remember, your voice is your power - use it!

Thanks to BettaMomma and everyone who's fighting this fight. :flex:

That is good news  , keep up the good work.

That is FANTASTIC news!!! I'm especially excited about the legislation you mentioned... it's about freakin' time fish and reptiles gained some legal protection!! They're living things too, after all.
