I have an extremely bloated male guppy, he was added along with a few other males, they are fine, he is not.It has been going on for a few weeks now, my assumption is when I did a water change it stressed him out and he got infected by some form of internal bacteria. I have researched this as best I can and have come to the conclusion its dropsy, if not its Kidney disfunction. I have treated the tank with interpet Anti-Internal Bacteria, Tetra General Tonic (currently making my tank very green) and Waterlife Fin Rot & Ulcers. It doesn't seem to have responded to any of the treatments, I don't have a hospital tank and this constant treatment is going to start to disturb my other fish in the tank. I've heard giving the fish a "bath" in solutions of saltwater and some other chemicals can work? If you have any advice on this it would be much appreciated.

PS: I have some pics but can't seem to add them, new to this and don't know where to find the "URL" to it

its best to use photo bucket for your pics as they give you all the url codes you need
you copy the img code then paste it here in the part with the 3 frames which says add media
hope this helps

Size of tnak in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
What do you feed the fish.

Are scales sticking out.
Can the fish maintain balance in the water.
What does it look like when the fish goes to the toilet.
is the anus enlarged or red and inflamed.

Being bloated can be constipation, dropsy, swim bladder, internal parasites.

Thanks for your response.

Right,

Tank Size: 35Ltre

Livestock: 5 Lampeye Killifish, 5 Guppy (3m 2f), 1 Pelco, 2 Kuhli Loaches, 5 Dwarf Gourami's (2m 3f). This tank is also heavily planeted so the Gourami's have retreats.

No Ammonia, Nitrite <0.25ppm, Nitrates around 10ppm.

I feed dry flake once a day, with the occassional dose of Frozen bloodworm.

Sick Guppies info;

Yes its scales seem to be sticking out, no it can't hold its balance underwater though it does venture, havn't actually seen it go to the toilet recently - will keep an eye out, no obvious signs of inflamation or irratiation.

Any other information needed please ask

Thanks

Your tanks severely overstocked.

Research the fish before you buy for tank size, adult size, and compatability.

Your water results are also telling you your tanks overstocked.

I would rehome the plecs as the tanks to small, and the loach.
To be honest the tank to small for most of the fish.

Even though some fish are small, some fish are very active. Need room to shoal.
Even livebearers need at least 10 gal as there active fish.

Once scales stick out last stage of dropsy. Organ failure.
All you can do is epson salt baths to help draw the fluids out.
Bacterial med.

Improve the fish diet with some frozen foods and veg.

For now immediate water change and increase aeration.

Many thanks for your help, I will look into buying a larger tank asap, any idea on a good size for the livestock i currently have? Further aeration has already been added to help. Cheers

Depends on which type of pleco the fish is.

Research tank size on the fish you keep.

I have sought advice from a local aquatics expert and after giving all the details he has concluded that the population in my tank is reasonable considering the frequent weekly water changes I do. Per his instructions I have given the sick Guppy a "bath" in untreated water (ie. Chlorinated) to kill off the bacteria infecting him, and treated the tank with a dose of Interpet Anti-Internal Bacteria which (with more regular follow up doses this time) should kill the remaining bacteria. Further areation has been permanately added through the purchase of a new air pump (lesser powered than the one for my 250litre tank), this is to assisst primarily overnight when the plants stop absorbing Carbon Dioxide and begin taking Oxygen from the water like fish, furthermore due to the fantastically low levels of Nitrates in my tank he has recommended I do a waterchange every 2 - 3 weeks to reduce the stress to the fish and stop taking the nitrates out of the water. Without a water change the Nitrite levels have dropped to nil, this fluctuation was no doubt due to the adding of the Dwarf Gourami's a few days ago. Many thanks for your advice. Problem Solved.

Dosn't know alot then does he recommending someone with an ovestocked tank to do water changes every 2 to 3 weeks.
We don't make money on here, we just help out, and try and give the correct advice out.
